EXPERIMENT 2 - THE EDGE: Quotes by the 3 Clients

These are quotes by each of the three clients: Jane Goodall, Florence Nightingale and Stephen Hawking, describing their ideas.

Jane Goodall:
"Each one of us must take responsibility for our own lives, and above all, show respect and love for living things around us, especially each other. Together we must reestablish our connections with the natural world and with the Spitiual Power that is around us."

(Jane Goodall: Reason for Hope, 2000, documentary, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Sydney)

Florence Nightingale:
"Apprehension, uncertainty, waiting, expectation, fear of surprise, do a patient more harm than any exertion."

(Said What? 2007, SaidWhat?, United Kingdom, accessed 15 April 2008, <http://www.saidwhat.co.uk/quotes/famous/florence_nightingale>

Stephen Hawking:
"If we do discover a complete theory, it should in time be understandable in broad principle by everyone, not just a few scientists. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists, and just ordinary people, be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist."

(Hawking, S 1988, A brief history of time: from the Big Bang to Black Holes, Bantam Press, London)

YouTube Video Related to my Experiment

My video shows the movement of a golf ball rolling down a staircase made from CD's protuding from a CD rack, serving as the steps. As the golf ball rolls down, it undertakes different materials and textures. The video then makes a transition to an animation of my SketchUp model, particularly focussing on the stairs.

Descriptions of Two Artists' Works

Patricia Piccinini - "The Young Family"

Piccinini’s work employs the materials of silicone, acrylic, human hair, leather and timber. Being a contemporary artwork, Piccinini’s “The Young Family” incorporates the use of variety of unique materials, such as human hair. Her work embodies a sense of nurture among the family, however, there is also a sense of grotesqueness through the artificiality of the animals with humanly features. Moreover, incorporating real human hair into the work creates a peculiar atmosphere. Piccinini would have made this sculpture by carefully making the shape of the animals through moulding, such as the technique used in ceramics.

Sidney Nolan - "Stringybark Creek"

Nolan’s work is made out of N’Ripolin on strawboard. This work is painted with dry brushstrokes through the technique of scumbling. Nolan employs a variety of colours, most prominently, blue, earth red, black, white and green, painted in a wild and gestural manner. Nolan’s work focuses on the natural environment, especially depicting the dry and harshness of Australia’s landscape. Also, the thickness of the paint suggests that Nolan may have used palette knives to spread the paint directly onto the work, and spreading it out.

2 Textures Imported into my SketchUp Model

These are the two textures I have imported into my SketchUp model. The 'smooth' texture is used for Patricia Piccinini's studio, and the 'natural' textre is used for Sidney Nolan's studio.

SketchUp Model of Stairs

This staircase is made out of stone, with the balustrades made out of transparent glass.

This staircase is made out of timber with the 'strings' made out of heavy metal wire.
